Yamagata troupe 1911 -1921 山形組

5 performers including 3 small boys – tumbling, contortionism

1909 December at the Hansa Theatre in Hamburg

1911 April

Jolly Japs. The Yamagata Japanese Troupe, which is making its first appearance in England at the Palace Theatre, seems disposed to excel if possible the wonders already displayed by the famous Okabe Family, with which it is connected. They use a quantity of flags, magnificent carpets, cushions, etc., to lend local colour to their act. Such tumbling has rarely been seen and they must have reached, if not well passed, the record for successive somersaults. Their feats of contortion are equally astounding, their bodies seeming to suddenly attain the flexibility of rubber. When not vigorously applauding the amazing skill of the five performers, three of which are small boys, the spectators are laughing heartily at the comic antics which are freely introduced.
