Seishu Watanabe

1868 May – born in Fukuoka, Japan

1897 S Watanabe, secretary of the Apollo circus. Troupe of Imperial Japanese – he and his wife fencing and duelling in Port of Spain, Trinidad, also Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Also H Oruno, juggler and Yonekichi, a child.

1897 – marries Tora according to 1911 census

1898 July – Watanabe’s Japanese troupe with Pawnee Bill’s Historical Wild West in USA

1898 step-daughter (according to 1921 census) Susan Fukushima born in Paris

1901 April census – Seishu Watanabe aged 34, Kikuzo Satto aged 21, Yesuki Fukushima 17, Tatsu Fukushima aged 21 (female), Soichi Fukushima 13, Shikazo Sano 33. All music hall artists, single, living in 5 Archer Street, West Hartlepool – Fukushima Troupe were performing at the Gaiety Theatre there.

1910 – Masao Lukushima born in Tendring, Essex (later recorded as Masao Watanabe)

1911 – April census:

Seishu Watanabe with Tora Watanabe, wife, married for 14 years and Takashi Nakagawa, 19, Schitaro Naito, 18, Kiyozo Kobayashi, 15 in boarding house in North Shields. All music hall artists.

1921 April – witness to wedding of Totaro Kondo in Manchester

1921 June census – Seishu Watanabe 53, out of work music hall artist, own account, Tora, wife, 42, music hall artist, Masao, son, 10, Yoshiko, daughter, 8, Susan F, stepdaughter, 23, music hall artist. In Hulme, Manchester

1923 Tora, Masao and Yoshiko leave England for Yokohama, Japan.

1925 April – Seishu Watanabe, aged 56, interpreter, “deportee” to Kobe on Haruna Maru.

1938 Yoshiko marries Shinichi Seki, an American Japanese from Hawaii, in Dairen, Manchuria.

1939 Yoshiko and Shinichi have a son, Franklin, in Dairen

1941 February – Yoshiko arrives in Hawaii.

1959 Yoshiko becomes naturalized American

2001 Shinichi Seki dies in Hawaii aged 93

2002 Yoshiko dies in Hawaii aged 90
