Sanger’s Circus

Originally called ‘Circus Sanger’, the company was founded in 1821 by John Sanger (1819-1889), born in Chew Magna, Somerset, England, and his brother ‘Lord’ George Sanger (1827-1911), born in Newbury, Berkshire.

1867 March – Sanger’s menagerie and circus claims to have a troupe of Bedouin Arabs and Japanese – visiting Ipswich (previous to March, only Bedouin Arabs were mentioned)

D’Alvini/Der Hang later claimed to have visited Japan with Sanger’s circus and that this had inspired him to bring a troupe of Japanese over to Britain.

1868 May – September – Extraordinary achievements of the Japanese. Sanger’s Grand Equestrian and Zoological Establishment.

1886 December – Kotaki with Sanger’s Circus in Bristol as Pongo Redivivus

1887 December – Tycoon Trio/the Gingero troupe of acrobats at Sanger’s Circus in Cheltenham. The Tycoon Japanese are very skilled in their performance with the flying ladder to 1888

1890 March – Tarro Troupe of Japanese artists, Sanger’s Circus, Sheffield

1890 October – Will Sley, agent, starts to promote Tarrosan, King of the Slanting Rope, “Performs the wonderful feat of walking up backwards and forwards and sliding perfectly erect upon his feet for life, marvellous high wire walker. Agent Sley, Oxford Street, Manchester. At Liberty December 1st, now on tour with Sanger and sons.”

1890 December – Mikado O Tarro, Japanese artiste extraordinaire, Sanger’s Circus Cardiff

1891 March – Tarro san the Japanese artiste, slide for life, Sangers Circus

1891 summer – Tarro san with Sanger’s circus in Cirencester, Swindon and Folkestone, “exclusively engaged by Lord John Sanger at an enormous salary” “completely dwarfs all others in his wonderful performance.”

1892 August – John Sanger’s Circus in Hove, with Tarro-san.

1893 March – TARRO-SAN, the marvellous Japanese artiste, is exclusively engaged by Lord John Sanger at an enormous salary, and completely dwarfs all others in his wonderful performance. But also “PONGO DUBOIS, the Marvellous Japanese Artiste, is exclusively engaged by Lord John Sanger, at an enormous salary, and completely dwarfs all others in his wonderful performance.”

1897 included Yokohama Troupe (who weren’t Japanese)

1905  Lord George Sanger’s Circus will visit Chesham on Thursday next, and the amusements will include the wonderful company of Japanese performers, who will amongst other things turn somersaults over great elephants
