1880 – Edwin Bale came up with the idea of a Japanese act around 1880 on his way back to Europe after working in South America. The act involved him, members of his family and fellow performers making themselves up to be Japanese, and they called themselves The Yokohama Troupe. (Hat tip to Brian, Bale relative)

1885 October – First appearance in England of the great Yokohama troupe – greatest juggling act ever seen in this country – 6 in number, men and women – London

1885 November – juggling with sharp pointed knives and lighted torches – wondrous feats of juggling with balls, bottles, plates

1886 January – 2 men, 2 women, 2 children. “look to us exceedingly like a combination which was once called the Bale troupe” (London & Provincial Entr’acte) Parasols and pigeons. Portsmouth
