1880 – Edwin Bale came up with the idea of a Japanese act around 1880 on his way back to Europe after working in South America. The act involved him, members of his family and fellow performers making themselves up to be Japanese, and they called themselves The Yokohama Troupe. (Hat tip to Brian, Bale relative)
