1901 Census – Shozo Kanaya footman to Minister Hayashi, Japanese ambassador to the UK. Aged 18

1901  August – Uyenishi Sadakazu and Tani Yukio in London, demonstrating jujitsu – arranged by Barton Wright at his Bartitsu club

1903 June – Uyenishi founds the “School of Japanese Self Defence” Golden Square, Piccadilly

1904 Uyenishi (Raku) and Tani Yukio promoted by William Bankier as Pocket Hercules

1904 April 40 gentlemen and six ladies in London learning Ju jitsu at Golden Square school – Prof S.K Uyenishi. First lesson is to learn how to fall

1906 November – The Textbook of Ju Jutsu published, written by Uyenishi

1906 November – Raku (Uyenishi) Jap wrestler, gives a scientific demonstration of Ju0jitsu assisted by Miss Moto [Louisa Motte Murakami], This young lady can certainly take care of herself, and the young man upon whom she exercises her skill has my deepest sympathy (Music Hall and Theatre Review 9 Nov p 6)

1910 June – Kumeji Deguchi arrives in London from Yokohama with 5 boys under 12 including Fujii Hirokichi, Hamamura Kizaburo, Matsui Shigejiro, Yoshii Kozo, Nakane Misaburo

1911 February – Louisa Motte Uyenishi leaves England with Misses S, K, T and Master T Uyenishi for Kobe

1911 February – The Ealing Scientific Physical Training Academy, Burlington House, Bond Street, Ealing opens with Ju Jitsu taught by Professor Koizumi

George Koizumi boarding in Moreton Place, Electrical Engineer, with the Winstanleys. Ida Winstanley is upholsterer and antique dealer 8 years older than him.

1911 June – White City, Ju-jitsu hall, at the Coronation exhibition – Taka, Mahbara, Isogai, Izumi, Professor Ohno

1911 December – Anglo Japanese Exhibition Alexandra Rink, Swansea, artisans, geishas, jugglers, ju-jitsu wrestlers, ivory carving, pottery working painting, embroidery, toy making, rice cake making, defence and attach etc. Tea served by geisha girls.

1912 April – Koizumi marries Ida Winstanley

1912 June – Yuko Tani and Tarro Miyake in Spain demonstrating ju jitsu

1913 Miyake Taruji marries Norah Chandler

1913 July – Kazue Dora Uyenishi born in Kobe

1913 December  – last peformances of Falco and Eida in Ireland – ju-jitsu speciality and dancing act.

1914 August – Miyake returns from Japan

1914 September – Miyake’s daughter Hanako born in Glasgow

1914 September – Miyake travels to New York – settles in USA. Without Norah and Hanako?

1915 – Shigeichiro Mishiku of Eastbourne – expert in Japanese china and arts, manager of the Japanese Artisans’ Troupe of Tokio

1918 Budokwai founded by Koizumi in London – Tani teaches there. By the end of the first year, the club has 54 members, 4 British, rest Japanese.

1920 Yukio Tani is running a boarding house at 37 Clarendon Road, where Mary Ferran has lived since 1918 and Tani’s child Moya is born.

1921 census – Yukio Tani boarding house keeper, music hall, wrestler, Kensington, with Mary Ferran and Moya. Koizumi Gunji with Ida and Hana in London. Is also working as antique lacquer restorer, consultant to V&A. Norah Miyake and Hanako in Wales.

1928 Uyenishi Sadakazu dies in Japan

1928 Louisa Moto Uyenishi and Freda/Sakuko (20+ years old), Janet (12+ years old) and Dora/Kazue (15+ years old) start journey back to Britain but Louisa dies of small pox in Shanghai.

1950 Yukio Tani dies in London

1965 Koizumi Gunji dies in London
