Japanese troupes in India

1857-8 Indian Rebellion, East India Company abolished, Governor General upgrades to Viceroy. Indian Civil Service established

1867 September – Tannaker Buhicrosan‘s Royal Tycoon arrive in Calcutta on the steamer Thunder (probably from China), en route for Britain (but actually go to Australia).

1867 September 19th and 21st – “some Japanese who give a very slow performance” “although they performed some really clever feats of manual dexterity.” “Japanese company of top spinners gave only 2 performances” They are going to Europe, calling at Madras along the way – Calcutta, Times of India 14th September and 28th September

1867 October 19th – opening of Japanese troupe of performers (butterfly trick and top spinning) in Calcutta. Visited by the Lieutenant Governor on 28th October.

1867 November 1 – cyclone in Calcutta – a Japanese performing troupe’s tent is blown away.

1870 March – Royal Tycoon Troupe of Japanese in Madras and then Calcutta “under the management of Mr King” Tricks on top of poles, legerdemain.

1872 January – February – Royal Tycoon Troupe in Bombay, prior to departure for Europe.

1872 November – Royal Tycoon Troupe – 13 Japanese gymnasts, acrobats, rope walkers, jugglers, in Bombay. Arrived from Yokohama by China Mail.

1872 December – King’s combination troupe/Royal Tycoon troupe – Bombay

1873 January – Royal Tycoon troupe of Japanese in Baroda

1873 November -The Royal Victoria Circus ((Tom) Wieland and Harry Lyons) and the Kioto Exhibition Troupe of Japanese, is another attraction in Calcutta and is by far the greatest combination ever seen in India. (The Australasian February 1874)

1873 December – Mikado troupe in Karachi – Takijiro (Takejooroo), bamboo balancing with a 7 and 8 year old, Fujikichi (Fugeekeegee) magic juggling, Osabroo screen evolution. Miss Okhanna Butterfly trick, Omaza ladders with Tooktooroo climbing, Otooko five stick juggling. Will then return to Bombay.

1874 January – February – Great Mikado Japanese troupe in Bombay with Chiarini’s Circus

1874 August – a Japanese troupe in Madras

1876 Queen Victoria becomes Empress of India

1886 March – Times of India notes that a Royal Tycoon Troupe played at the Alfred Theatre in Bombay

1888 March G Harmston and Japanese gentlemen with their supple little boy appear with Chiarini’s circus in Madras and Calcutta

1892 September – Harmston’s circus in Yokohama, “attracting full tents” then on to China and India.

1894 March – Harmston’s circus – Three little Japanese boys performing contortionism – Madras

1896 Harmston’s circus in Java, India, Rangoon
