Japanese troupes in Edinburgh

1867 August-September – Great Dragon Troupe perform in Royal Princess’s Theatre, Nicolson Street [It was built as a variety theatre in 1862 and opened as the New Royal Alhambra Music Hall, though it was not profitable. The name was changed in 1867, and the Royal Princess’s operated as a theatre until 1886. there was then a change of use and the building was demolished in 1912 ]. Then at Music Hall, George Street (now the Assembly Rooms). 24 performers, mostly male, several ladies, 2 or 3 juveniles. Godayū mentioned. Run extended. Then to Hamburg.

1870 April – Tannaker’s Original Royal Tycoon Japanese at Music Hall, George Street

1870 November – Newsome’s Grand Circus – the Wonderful Japanese, including Little All Right. Tycoon’s Private Great Dragon Troupe from the Crystal Palace.

1876 November – “The Royal Tycoon Japanese Troupe from the Crystal Palace” Original Tycoon Troupe. Mr HW Wieland. Operetta house. Gin Goro Jack, Fousah Ketchey,  As Sa Ma Ki, Yama Moto, Moto Ketchie, Como Ketchey. “whose acrobatic and athletic feats caused such a sensation a number of years ago in Glasgow “

“Gin Goro and Komo Ketchey will perform the most astounding feat ever witnessed in the history of man. Komo, whose weight is over 10 stone, will climb to the top of a bamboo ladder 30 feet high, he will then be lifted by Gin Goro, placed on his shoulder and while balanced perform innumerable difficult feats to the delight of all beholders” Edinburgh Evening News 11 November 1876

1878 December – Jan 1879 – Tycoon Troupe of Japanese in Edinburgh, Glasgow, five in number, with Hengler’s Circus.

1886 July – Japanese Village in Edinburgh – Suzucki – Mitsuta Troupe – the most marvellous combination of Japanese acrobats ever seen in this country – Mons Tannakear Japanese juggler, Motto Kitchee Japanese Rope Walker, Saito female Japanese banjoist, Etoo Egoo Male Japanese dancer.

1907 May – Tokio Troupe of five Japanese – Theatre Royal

1907 November – Empire Palace – The Andos, a troupe of Japanese acrobats, are as distinctive as are many of the products of the “flowery land,” wrestling and otherwise, who have of recent years been cast on these shores. One of the Japs walked up a rope from stage to gallery, and slid down, one of the most sensational acrobatic feats seen in Edinburgh for some time provoking great applause.

1908 March – Riogoku family of 6 did some wonderful work as conjurers, equilibrists and acrobats, the lady member of the company being particularly expert and dexterous Empire Theatre

1909 June – a rather thrilling aerial of feats by the Andos, troupe of daring Japanese equilibrists. Amongst the most sensational of these feats is the balancing of a rod upon the shoulder of one of the elder performers whilst on the top one of the girls drives the pedals of a bicycle turned upside down. Another particularly daring feat is performed by one of the girls, who is brought on the stage concealed in a large artificial bouquet of flowers, and balances herself on a number of boxes and bricks. 1913 August – “The Mojis”–such is the title of a troupe of Japanese top-spinners who produce “the great slide for life.” From the element of danger which it provides it is sure to he attractive, and last night at the “houses” after a few minutes tense silence, vented their opinion in no uncertain manner. The feat consists of a rope fastened from the gallery to the stage, up which the performer walks blind-folded and then slides down at a tremendous speed. ” The Mojis” got a splendid reception. 1913 September – Nik-ko, a Japanese troupe of acrobats, performed some thrilling feats. By way of climax, one of the lady members walked up a rope, stretched from the stage to the highest circle. King’s Theatre

1915 April – Fuji Family – The Royal – There was nothing more interesting in the entertainment, however, than the performance of the Fuji family Japanese equilibrists. Their feats of balancing were exceptionally clever, especially that which one them manoeuvred upon eccentric ladder supported on the shoulder of another of the troupe. Their “turn” closed with daring ascent by of the men upon tight rope from the stage to the gallery. He walked briskly up, and then slid rapidly backwards. The “house” applauded the performance heartily.
