1867 March – Sanger’s Menagerie and Circus – troupe of Bedouin Arabs and Japanese

1869 November – Japanese troupe from London, public hall. Tannaker’s troupe

The Japanese Troupe – On Thursday and yesterday (Friday) evenings an entertainment of quite a novel description was given at the Public Hall. The performers are a party of male and female Japanese, on who succeed in amusing an audience for two hours uncommonly well with their Japanese tricks and feats, amongst which is an extraordinary display of the famous top spinning, in which two of the performers are marvellous adepts. One of them in a wonderful manner manages to keep the top spinning upon the top of a stick at an angle of 45֯, and another spins a top upon at the edge of a sharp sword, and makes another travel, while spinning, along a piece of thread placed horizontally. They appear to be able to do anything with a top, and one is actually made to travel up a line hanging from what would appear to be a sort of Chinese lantern upon the roof of the hall. When, however, the top reaches the lantern, it is transformed into what they term a “Nepon Cochina; or Temple of Japan,” and forms a very pretty sight. The other feats, which are equally startling, consist of brick balancing and balancing of eggs, which is a truly marvellous feat. Not the least amusing part of the entertainment is the description of Japanese life, manners, and customs, by  the interpreter “Buhicrosan,” who is exceedingly droll, and causes considerable amusement. The females appear, and dance Japanese dances and sing a few Japanese airs. The entertainment will he continued this day (Saturday), afternoon and evening, when any a person who has not seen them will find in it a most agreeable two hours’ amusement.
