Hengler’s circus

Frederick Charles Hengler (1820-1887) established in March 1857 a permanent circus in Liverpool, and erected buildings in Glasgow and Dublin in 1863, in Hull in 1866, in Bristol in 1867, and in Birmingham in 1868. He maintained companies that moved from one circus to another.

1867 July 4-6 Matsui Gensui Troupe in Bristol with Charles Hengler’s Grand Cirque

1871 January – Great Dragon Troupe in Britain have 5 week engagement with Hengler’s Grand Cirque, West Nile Street in Glasgow. “The Japanese lady C Tarassan ascended a cord stretched from the ground on the one side of the circle to the roof of the other, the only means of balancing used being an expanded umbrella” then slid back down

1878 December – Jan 1879 – Tycoon Troupe of Japanese in Edinburgh, Glasgow, five in number, with Hengler’s Circus.

1879 January – Scotia Music Hall, Tycoon Japanese Troupe, champion tumblers of the world. 5 in number. Hengler’s Circus.

1882 August – Dublin – Hengler’s Grand Cirque – O’Torra The Japanese Marvel

1890 February – Hengler’s Grand Cirque – special engagement of the great and original Japanese marvel Little Allright in his extraordinary feats of equilibrium and slide for life.

1890 April – May – Hengler’s Cirque – the wonderful Mitsuta‘s Japanese Troupe

1895 February – Mitsutas in Liverpool

1897 February – Perth Australia – Mikado Troupe – father daughter and two sons with George Harmston, Henglers Circus.
