Giro-san’s Troupe 1911-1914

1911 May – Circus Mishap at Hayle. Japanese Performer Falls 30 Feet. A sensational accident occurred to one of the star performers of the travelling circus owned by Mr. E. H. Bostock at Hayle, on Monday. As a means of attraction, Giro, of Japanese extraction, and a leader of a smart troupe of Japanese Jugglers and ladder-balancers, performs a daring slanting-rope feat outside the circus marquee before the performance. The accident happened whilst this feat was being performed. Just previous to the matinee a steel-lined Manila rope is stretched from a pole 30 feet high to a small winch on the ground. Having been drawn taut, Giro grips the rope between his big toe and second toe on either foot, and ascends the rope, afterwards sliding down. On Monday be was watched by a large crowd. He ascended to the top in safety, when the onlookers were horrified to see him fall. One of toe fastenings securing the rope seems to have given way, bringing the performer to the turf. Giro was unconscious, and Dr. Mudge advised his removal to the West Cornwall Infirmary, Penzance. Thither he was taken, and it was found that though he had fallen from a height of 30 feet no bones were broken. There was considerable braising and shock, and slight concussion of the brain, but Giro is not in danger. He soon recovered consciousness.
