1869 March The passenger list for the Hero from Auckland in March 1869 lists Mr and Mrs Lenton, Mr H Lenton, Masters Frank and John Lenton, Louis Ferrari, 11 Japanese and 2 Europeans of the Japanese troupe. Presumably one of the two Europeans was Phil Kirby and it is likely the other European may have been George Gibson.

1869 April Mr Thomas Lenton who has dissolved his partnership with Mr John Smith, takes upon himself the responsibility of introducing the next company of Japanese to this colony, and with that view is making his arrangements to depart for the East by the outgoing mail. He will be accompanied by Mr Herbert Skelton, Masters John and Frank, and Mr Gibson, as agent. They will make for Japan, there to await the arrival of Mr Kirby and Gingero from the interior, with the new company. Herald p. 3 17 April

1869 April – Mr & Mrs Lenton depart Victoria for Pont de Galle for Yokohama with Mr G. Gibson, Mr Herbert and two boys.

1869 June 18th arrived in Southampton on the Massilia from Melbourne with Mr and Mrs Lenton

1870 May Gibson placed an advertisement in The Era saying he was in London, looking to chaperone troupes, was about to return to Australia, and asking W Buhicrosan to get in touch for “news of importance.”

The last record of Gibson was as a passenger on the City of Sydney, which left London in August 1870, the month after King’s troupe arrived in Britain. Perhaps the troupe’s arrival was the news of great importance that Gibson was referring to, but it is likely Tannaker was already in Japan at this point. King’s troupe was taken over by Parravicini and Corbyn as agents.

The City of Sydney was meant to arrive in Sydney in February 1871 but never docked. It was presumed that the ship sunk without trace, with the loss of all hands.
