Charles Henry Dallas

1842 January – born West Norwood, Surrey to William Dallas, a Scottish born “East India merchant”. Distantly related (through his great great grandfather) to the Dallas family who were sugar barons in Jamaica, descendants including Alexander J. Dallas, United States Secretary of the Treasury 1814-1816 and his son George M. Dallas who was Vice President of the United States from 1845-1849.

1863 June – in Shanghai, initiated into Royal Sussex Lodge 501, occupation merchant. Barnes Dallas, his brother is a tea merchant there.

1864 moved to Japan

1866 transferred to Yokohama Lodge

1868 founded partnership – Stephenson, Dallas & Co Merchants, with T.S. Stephenson from Manchester

1869 transferred to Otentosama Lodge

1870 took up post as English teacher of the Kaisei School in Tokyo. Transferred to Nippon Lodge.

1871 Is attacked with a sword by a young Japanese officer in Tokyo

1871 teacher at Yokugakusha, Yonezawa

1873 married Emily Seymour in Guildford, England

1875 returned to Yokohama, bringing a Yonezawa cow with him.

1876 employed by Whitfield & Dowson, engineering company

Public Accountant Average Adjuster and Estate Agent in Yokohama, Dallas & Co

1884 met with Tannaker in Yokohama

1885 was on the secretariat of the Asiatic Society of Japan

1885 left Japan for Shanghai

1886 re-joined Shanghai Lodge, trading in coal and copper
